Celebrity Activism: Featured Roundtable in Barcelona, July 4, 2015
In this roundtable discussion, key speakers and delegates will engage in sharing exclusive experiences and knowledge on publicity, advertising and media in celebrity activism. Its purpose is to generate discussion on successful examples of celebrity activism and how philanthropy can be improved with new techniques.
Key Speakers:
Dr. Nathan Farrell is Senior Lecturer in Communication and Media in the Faculty of Media and Communication at Bournemouth University, UK. His research interests include the politics of popular culture, celebrity activism, and the communications strategies of NGOs. He has published research on neoliberalism and the non-profit sector, and the work of celebrities in global peace and international development campaigns. He is the editor of the forthcoming The Political Economy of Celebrity Activism.
Dr. Jackie Raphael is a lecturer in Creative Advertising and Graphic Design at Curtin University in Western Australia. Her research focuses on celebrity culture, social media, endorsements, branding, iconic status and bromances. Through her research on endorsements Dr. Raphael explores celebrity activism; the way a celebrity can make a difference and the impact philanthropy has on the celebrity’s brand identity. Dr. Raphael is in the steering group of Inter-Disciplinary.Net and on the advisory board of Centre for Media and Celebrity Studies. She is also the creator and producer of the YouTube series titled Celebrity Chat. Dr. Raphael has published various papers and is the co-editor of the upcoming books, Credibility and the Incredible: Disassembling the Celebrity Figure and Bridging the Gaps Between Celebrity and Media.
Dr. Sally Totman Marshall will be joining the roundtable as well.
